Why Does CBD Make Me Feel High?

CBD has made its claim to fame for being the non-psychoactive sister molecule to THC. offering physiological and mental benefits without a psychedelic experience. Although this is true about CBD, some consumers have been led astray, as CBD happens to have a number of side effects if not dosed and handled properly.

Though CBD is still a relatively harmless substance, there are some risks in consuming CBD that you should consider prior to adding it to your daily wellness routine.

Improper dosing can lead to unwanted side effects

It may be uncommon, but in high doses, CBD can induce mild side effects. This often occurs when beginners take a dose that exceeds 100 mg.

Some consumers have claimed to experience fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, and drowsiness when taking a high dose of CBD. These effects will go away within a few hours, and can be reduced by staying hydrated and keeping blood sugar levels stable.

These symptoms can also be avoided by following the standard dosing model for CBD. Sticking to lower doses, and only increasing in increments of 5-10mg will help avoid unpleasant effects as well as minimize the waste of CBD that can occur when taking a higher dose than necessary.

Possible side effects of CBD

When taking too high of a dose of CBD some of the following effects may occur:

  • Dry mouth
  • Reduced appetite
  • Drowsiness and fatigue
  • Diarrhea

CBD has also been known to interact with other pharmaceuticals, causing dangerous interactions. Always consult a medical professional before trying CBD if you are currently using any of the following medications:

  • Steroids
  • Antihistamines
  • Antibiotics
  • Antidepressants
  • Beta-blockers
  • NSAIDs
  • Blood thinners

How CBD alters the way you think and feel

Beyond the side effects that may make you feel funny, there may also be additional effects that lead to the sensation of feeling ‘high’ on CBD. Unlike cannabis, CBD does not alter the mind the way traditional psychedelics do, however there are some effects that you may notice give off the feeling of an altered state of mind.

High doses of CBD can sometimes create a pressure in the back of your eyes, leading to a sensation that feels similar to being high (without the headiness). You may also notice your heart rate rises on CBD, as cannabinoids impact the cardiovascular system. These two sensations paired with the feeling of relaxation and stress-relief can often feel as though you may be high, however you are not! This calm state of mind is simply your nervous system returning to its baseline.
When living with chronic stress and fatigue, CBD can feel somewhat uplifting, soothing your mind and body to support better rest. The contrast between these two states of being can often occur as if the CBD has altered you mentally or emotionally. Ultimately CBD does alter the mind and body, but it is different from other plant compounds in the sense that it may make you feel more mellow, but you won’t have a psychedelic experience.
