Can CBD Increase Anxiety Attacks?

When suffering from chronic stress and anxiety, the last thing you want is a supplement that can trigger more frequent anxiety. CBD has emerged on the market as a soothing, plant-based alternative for treating the symptoms of anxiety and promoting calming feelings.

This incredible compound is relatively safe for use, and in most cases will not cause additional anxiety or intense side effects. However, it is possible to feel anxious on a high dose of CBD.

To better understand and prevent this, first we will explore whether or not CBD can cause anxiety.

When CBD induces panic

Although incredibly unlikely, there are some cases where high doses of CBD have triggered panic or anxiety in users. This is often due to a dose higher than necessary. It is not fully understood how CBD may cause anxiety attacks, but it is likely due to interactions between CBD and the CB2 receptor in the nervous system. This reaction can lead to rebound anxiety or other stressful symptoms in some individuals.

CBD interacts with the same part of the brain and nervous system that is responsible for regulating anxiety levels. Thus, much of the sensations associated with CBDs calming or stimulating effects could feel very similar to symptoms of anxiety (or anxiety relief). It is not that CBD will cause anxiety attacks, but it may trigger anxiety symptoms in some cases.

Individuals who have pre existing anxiety disorders may be more vulnerable to experiencing negative side effects of CBD.

If you are a good candidate for sampling CBD, there are ways you can avoid adverse effects by following accurate dosing guidelines and shopping from reputable CBD suppliers.

Dosing CBD for anxiety

Safe and correct dosing is critical to prevent any dry mouth, change in blood pressure, or dizziness while taking CBD.

CBD dosing varies in the sense that there is no one-size-fits-all dosing. It is very much based on body weight and metabolism. Though there is still much to learn about high-dose CBD, studies have already noted that high doses of CBD (400-600 mg) can increase symptoms of anxiety. It’s important to note that in a separate study, patients being treated for anxiety disorders found a dose of 300 mg to be effective and soothing.

Doses can range between 10-500 mg depending. It is typically advised to increase your dose slowly to avoid triggering unwanted effects. If you or someone you know consumes a heavy dose and experiences symptoms of anxiety it is best to stay hydrated, maintain blood sugar levels, and be patient as the effects will dissipate shortly.

Drug interactions with CBD

Lastly, it is important to be aware of any possible drug interactions that can occur when consuming CBD regularly. Especially for individuals on SSRIs or anti-depressants, CBD may increase blood concentrations of products such as fluoxetine (Prozac), leading to further effects or health risks. Combining CBD with medications for anxiety or depression can induce dizziness and nausea.

Though CBD is very safe and promising as a stress relief remedy, it’s always good to speak with a trusted medical professional before seeking CBD as a treatment method for mood stability or anxiety.
