Everything You Should Know When Selecting CBD Tinctures: from 5mg to 900mg Tincture

For every person there is a unique sweet spot when it comes to dosing CBD effectively. This ultimately stems from what the goals of using CBD are, as different doses can offer varying effects.

A stronger dose (>100mg) can often have more exaggerated effects and even cause sedative effects but have many benefits for pain management and relaxation. Whereas a lower dose might be more beneficial for mood stability and stress relief. Everybody reacts slightly differently to CBD, making it crucial for new CBD consumers to dose conservatively until the effects are better understood.

In this article we breakdown all of the basics on dosing CBD tinctures and selecting the right blend for your needs.

Do CBD Tinctures Really Work?

Tincture is one of the most common ways to orally consume CBD. They come in many different blends and flavors, often including other botanical ingredients to increase desired effects.

CBD tinctures are great for mood stability, but also have anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects. They are most effective when ingested by placing the tincture dose under the tongue to allow for direct absorption into the mouth’s capillaries. Slightly more fast acting than edible CBD, tinctures take about 15-30 minutes to take effect.

Selecting the right CBD tincture for you

Many tinctures are advertised as having specific effects, such as sleep aid or stress relief and can be enhanced by other ingredients like ashwagandha or lemon balm. Depending on your specific needs there are three factors to consider when selecting a CBD tincture:

  • What is your target dose?
  • What are you treating?
  • Do you prefer full spectrum, broad spectrum, or CBD isolate?

Based on these answers it will narrow down your choices to the perfect tincture for you.

How to dose CBD tinctures

The easiest way to dose CBD successfully when just starting out is to begin with a low dose and build from there. It is often recommended to start around 10mg and increase by 5mg-10mg increments every 3 days until satisfied with the effects. This helps avoid any unwanted side effects (like dry mouth or dizziness), and also protects you from building up your tolerance too quickly and wasting your tincture.

CBD has a biphasic effect, meaning there is a bell curve of effectiveness – to put it more simply, a low dose or an extremely high dose are just as ineffective. Most people have a dose sweet spot between 10mg-500mg.

If you ever feel like you may have built up a tolerance and your tincture is not as effective as it was originally, you can simply take a tolerance break to reset your body. An average tolerance break could be anywhere from seven days to three weeks.

The benefits of CBD tinctures

High Dose CBD

Higher doses of CBD (>100mg) are more ideal for heavy stress relief or physical pain relief. There may be more side effects at a higher dose, such as dizziness or a change in appetite so it is important to slowly work your way up to this dose.

It has been found that doses between 300 – 600 mg may have potential for biphasic properties, so it is often suggested to dose above this range at around 900mg – 1500mg.

Low Dose CBD

Lower doses of CBD can be preferred for treating symptoms of mood. Doses between 10 – 30 mg are ideal for uplifting your mood.

Full-spectrum vs. broad spectrum vs. CBD Isolate

When considering what type of CBD oil you want to consume there are three main categories: full-spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolate.

The primary difference between full-spectrum and broad spectrum oils is in the THC content. Full-spectrum CBD oil contains all cannabinoids and compounds present in the resin of the plant, including up to 0.3% THC. On the other hand, broad spectrum CBD contains many of these compounds and cannabinoids but excludes THC.

Though both extracts have similar benefits, one might opt to go for a full-spectrum oil to avoid THC consumption, while another person may choose broadspectrum as they enjoy the entourage effect of THC in their CBD tincture.

In contrast to these full plant extracts, isolate is exactly what it sounds like – a purified form of CBD, void of other cannabinoids and compounds. This pure form of CBD can have strong and often energizing effects compared to full-spectrum or broad spectrum CBD. It is medically the cleanest form of CBD, however some consumers opt for the full plant oils as they may have more full bodied effects.
