How to Make CBD Edibles

Seeing edibles and specifically gummies listed on Forbes as the most popular way adults consume CBD, it’s no surprise that people have begun to get creative and take a stab at their own recipes at home.

Turn your favorite recipes into CBD edibles

Cooking up your own CBD edibles comes with a few perks. Purchasing bulk CBD oil or isolate can save you some considerable cash. With many countries that sell legal CBD, there are limitations on the potency of edibles, often capped at 100 mg per item (even less per dose).

Now you can infuse more CBD at home into your favorite meals and baked good recipes. Any dish can be infused with CBD if prepared properly – gone are the days of only finding sugary CBD confections from retailers. This is an amazing ingredient to add to your spice cabinet, reaffirming the practices of food as medicine, and living a balanced life.

Choose the right dose

It all begins with understanding how to accurately dose your CBD edibles. This may require a kitchen scale that can measure to the 0.00 decimal, depending on your batch sizes. For larger batches, a less accurate scale is suitable.

If you are using your CBD products for pain management and relief from inflammation, a higher dose may be preferable. For example, if you are making a batch of ginger cookies that yields 16 cookies, you will need to infuse that with around 1600 mg or 1.6 g of CBD. This would make each cookie a strong 100 mg.

Perhaps you are looking for a micro dose of CBD to balance your mood and manage daily stress. This will require a lower dose taken daily of around 5-20 mg. To make the same batch of cookies at this dose, you would need to add a total of 80 to 320 mg of CBD.

A simple trick for mixing CBD into your meals in a pinch would be to prepare cooking oils with a high dose of CBD.  You can then measure out the potency of your dose using this mother oil. Furthermore, adding this oil onto a meal at the end when plating can also ensure accurate dosing for each plate. This is especially useful when infusing CBD into large casseroles, or difficult to portion recipes.

How to handle your CBD oil in the kitchen

Lastly, there are a few important things to know when it comes to handling CBD in the kitchen. Follow these tips to avoid degrading the quality of your CBD or the potency of your final product.

Avoid high heat! When handling CBD it is important to avoid extended exposure to high heat. CBD degrades at temperatures higher than 160 Degrees C. It is best to add CBD into your recipe at the end (diluted into a base oil or alcohol mixture), however baking with CBD will still be effective.

CBD oil is soluble in oils and alcohols, but not water. CBD is categorized as a non-aqueous substance, meaning it does not dissolve into water without a carrier or emulsifying agent. CBD is naturally soluble in both oil and alcohol mixtures so it is important to always mix and melt your CBD isolate/extract into oil-based products like butter or olive oil.

Keep CBD stored in dry, cool, dark spaces. When you’re not using your CBD, keep it stored in a controlled cool environment to avoid oxidizing your CBD. Keeping CBD away from direct sunlight will also reduce the risk of CBD aging or losing potency.
