What is CBD Coffee?

There’s nothing quite like a fresh cup of coffee. With over 80% of UK households consuming coffee, it is no surprise that coffee is a staple in the UK lifestyle. Now with health trends on the rise, many people are turning to coffee alternatives and supplements that alter the coffee drinker’s experience and support the nervous system. Natural ingredients like reishi and kava are added to coffee as adaptogens and neuro-protective aids, however CBD takes the cake when it comes to coffee infusions! So, what is CBD Coffee? Even more importantly, how do these two plant-based ingredients work together? Let’s check out the chemistry that makes this pair so great.

The science behind coffee

When exploring the benefits of CBD coffee, it’s important to understand how caffeine works in the body. Caffeine, the active ingredient in coffee, disrupts adenosine functions in the brain, a common neurotransmitter that calms the nervous system, supporting sedative sensations and sleep. By blocking this function, caffeine leaves the body and mind feeling awake and energetic.

As caffeine binds to adenosine receptors, it often dilates your blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more freely. Though, when caffeine is consumed in high quantities, this effect may be reversed. Furthermore, caffeine stimulates the nervous system, leading to a possible build up of adrenaline. This paired with increased blood pressure and speedy neural activity can induce the effect coffee drinkers describe as “jitters”.

It’s hypothesized that CBD and caffeine work so well together because CBD regulates the nervous system and can reduce these jittery effects without reducing energy or focus.

CBD works synergistically with caffeine

The synergistic effects between CBD and coffee begin with the way they both interact with the nervous system. Both CBD and caffeine interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), an integral part of the nervous system responsible for functions like equilibrium, stability, immunity, mood, and memory.

A lesser known fact about the ECS is its role in controlling the constriction and dilation of blood vessels. As CBD soothes and regulates the function of the ECS, it is possible it could disrupt the intensity of effects on blood flow that caffeine creates.

Is it safe to combine CBD and coffee?

Ultimately, this combination is considered safe. Though there doesn’t appear to be any adverse effects of CBD coffee, our understanding of their effects from a clinical standpoint are relatively new. At this point, it can be assumed that physically combining CBD with coffee does nothing drastically different than the two on their own.

In order to avoid any unwanted side effects of CBD coffee, it is best to select a proper dose. Each person’s dosing may vary depending on your goals. It is always best to start at a lower dose and work your way up to your desired effect (example, starting dose of 5-10 mg CBD / 25-50 mg caffeine).

Alternatively, you can always mix your CBD into tea as a way to hydrate and enjoy the benefits of CBD.

CBD oil vs. water-soluble CBD

One last trick we will leave you with: how to mix CBD into your coffee at home. CBD is oil-soluble and won’t easily mix into water. It could crash out and leave a bitter, oily film on the top of your drink. Seek water-soluble CBD options or even blend your CBD into milk or cream (fat soluble liquids). This will guarantee a way better flavor and uniform blend of your CBD coffee.
